Manchester United have condemned fans who chanted “unacceptable” songs about the Hillsborough tragedy at Anfield.
The club were comfortably beaten by title-chasers Liverpool, and a spokesperson said Manchester United will work to educate fans on the issue.
On 15 April 1989, 97 Liverpool fans died as a result of a crush during an FA Cup semi-final against Nottingham Forest, at Hillborough stadium.
It is one of the worst sporting disasters in the UK and an inquest later ruled that they were unlawfully killed.
“Manchester United stands in solidarity with Liverpool and its fans in remembering the victims of the Hillsborough disaster,” a club spokesperson said.
“Offensive chants about the tragedy are completely unacceptable and we will work with our supporters’ groups to educate fans on the issue.”
During the seventh minute, fans from both teams came together in a minute’s applause in support of Cristiano Ronaldo and his family, who announced on Monday that their newborn boy had died.
Liverpool fans sang the club anthem You’ll Never Walk Alone, while both sets of players wore black armbands.
Goals from Sadio Mane, Mohamed Salah and Luis Diaz secured a comfortable 4-0 win for Liverpool.
Manchester United’s cross-city rivals Manchester City also apologised on Saturday after a small section of fans disturbed a minute’s silence marking the 33rd anniversary of the diaster during their FA Cup semi-final against the Merseysiders at Wembley.
