Platinum Jubilee: Queen’s family put front and centre during celebrations | UK News

There was only one finale the crowds wanted and they got it.

The Queen again stepping out, with her three direct heirs Prince Charles, Prince William and Prince George, alongside her.

Camilla and Kate were also there, the important supportive wives, along with Charlotte and Louis.

It was a snapshot of the future on a palace balcony that’s been such a focal point for so many milestones of the past 70 years.

Even for them that moment must have been breathtaking, as a crowd of thousands cheered for the monarch.

During the weekend the pendulum had swung from official moments to the more relaxed and funny, and at the centre of it all was the Queen’s family.

In the week leading up to the celebrations a documentary of her home videos had given us a hint of the tone she wanted to convey.

A woman who wanted to show us that she couldn’t have achieved this momentous milestone without the love of her family.

And she alluded to that in her message to say thank you.

“While I may not have attended every event in person, my heart has been with you all; and I remain committed to serving you to the best of my ability, supported by my family,” she wrote.

Throughout the weekend her relatives have stepped in for her, at St Pauls for the Thanksgiving service and at the Epsom Derby.

And the younger royals have been despatched to other parts of the United Kingdom, carrying out engagements that her and Prince Philip might have done in the past to make sure the whole country felt involved.

The way they rallied around her this weekend reminded me of the week that Prince Philip died when a number of them released messages promising to look after their mummy or granny, and for her Platinum Jubilee that’s just what they’ve done.

At 96 things she has always done in the past aren’t quite so easy now, you could see that as she slowly walked out onto the balcony.

For all of the pageantry, carnival and British eccentricity of the weekend, it will be the more subtly delivered message that will have a lasting impact.

A weekend where the Queen has shown us she has faith in her family and wants us to believe in them too.

Always with one eye on the future, she has once again made history, marking a spectacular 70 years as Queen.
