Dhawan was born on 5th December, 1985 in Delhi to. H Punjabi family. His parents Mahendra Pal Dhawan (Father) and Sunaina Dhawan (Mother). Completed his schooling in St. Marks Senior Secondary Public School in Paschim Vihar. He started playing cricket since childhood and begin his club career as wicket-keeper batsman.

Married Melbourne-based Ayesha Mukherjee in 2012, who is a half-Bengali, half-British amateur boxer. She had two daughters from her previous marriage – Rhea and Aliyah. Dhawan and Ayesha had a son, Zoravar Dhawan.
