A plan to build a new royal yacht has been scrapped, Defence Secretary Ben Wallace has confirmed.

The successor to the Royal Yacht Britannia – expected to cost around £200m – was going to be used to sail the globe to host trade talks, and be named after the late Prince Philip.

But speaking in the Commons, Mr Wallace said he had terminated the competition to build a new “national flagship” with immediate effect.
