A man has died after being found unconscious inside a walk-in freezer at a New York bakery.

The 33-year-old man had been cleaning the freezer when he accidentally locked himself inside at around 3am, according to US media reports.

He was found more than five hours later.

ABC News reported that he had come to the US from Mali and was the father of five children.

One of his colleagues said the man had worked at the bakery – Beigel’s in Brooklyn – for three months.

In a statement, Beigel’s Bakery manager David Greenberger said: “We are devastated by the loss of our employee in this accident.

“The family has been notified and we extended our deepest condolences to them.

“Grief counsellors are on the site to provide counselling and support to the family and to our employees.

“This is an ongoing situation and we are co-operating with all investigations. We have no further comment at this time.”

Police said that the manner and cause of the victim’s death were not yet clear.

Beigel’s is in Brooklyn’s East Flatbush neighbourhood.

Its clients include airlines, hotels and other businesses.
