Meira Kumar Family and Earlier Life
Meira was born on 31 March 1945 in Arrah, Bihar, India. Her parents Jagjivam Ram (Father) is former Deputy Prime Minister of India and her mother Indrani Devi was a freedom fighter. She was belongs to Dalit community/ caste and her father Jagjivan Ram is a prominent Dalit leader in late 90s.
She went of Welham Girls School, Dehradun and Maharani Gayatri Devi Girls’ Public School in Jaipur for her schooling. Then joined Indraprastha College for her M.A. went to Miranda House, Delhi University for L.L.B.
She is layer by profession, former diplomat and received an honorary doctorate from Banasthali Vidyapith in 2010. Meira was married to Manjul Kumar (husband) and she has one son and two daughter.
Meira Kumar Career & Facts
Meira joined politics in 1970 as Indian Foreign Service and spent her life in lot of countries. For the first time, She represent fo Congress party in election in 1985 at Bijnor in Uttar Pradesh.
In her debut election she defeated two heavy weight opposite candidates Ram Vilas Paswan and Mayawati.
She later elected as member of eight, eleventh and twelth Lok Sabha. And she lost in 1999 election against BJP candidate.
Meira later re-elected as member of parliment with support of her Father prior constituency Sasaram in Bihar and served from 2004 and 2009.
In 2004 to 2009 term she was elected as Minister of Social Justice and Empowerment by Congress party.
From 2009 to 2014, She was elected the Speaker of Lok Sabha, thereby becoming the first woman speaker of the country.
In 2014, Meira Kumar was lost to Chhedi Paswan in Sasaram constituency with vote margin of 63,327.
In 2017, Meira nominated as presidential candidate by Congress Indian President Poll against NDA candiate Ram Nath Kovind.
