Four British men have been arrested in Greece after cocaine worth more than £42.5m was found in a banana shipment.

The nearly 300kg stash was uncovered in a shipping container by Italian authorities last month as part of a large-scale operation to dismantle an international drug trafficking ring.

On Friday, the suspects were arrested at a house near the northern Greek city of Thessaloniki on drug smuggling charges.

The seized drugs had been bound for the city as well as Australia and other European countries.

A gun, large sums of money and walkie-talkies were also discovered.

The men, aged 38, 45, 48 and 52, have not been identified but authorities have confirmed they are from London and Liverpool.

A video showed the four men, one of whom appeared to have his face covered, being led into a building while in handcuffs.

A fifth British man, believed to be outside of Greece, is also wanted for questioning.

The arrests come following an international law enforcement operation, which involved Italian customs authorities and the US Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA).
