Instagram has launched new parental controls on the platform in the UK, allowing parents to set a daily time limit and schedule break times.
Meta, which owns the app, said parents and guardians of users aged under 18 can now set a daily time limit between 15 minutes to 2 hours before a black screen appears.
The new supervision features will also allow parents to see accounts reported by their children and the reason, as well as see who follows them and who they follow, and schedule breaks.
Parents can now initiate the supervision tools by sending an invitation to their child, which previously only the children could send.
The new tools came into effect on Tuesday.
Meta announced the new features in the US in March and will also begin rolling them out to Japan, Australia, Ireland, Canada, France and Germany this month.
The tech giant, which also owns Facebook and WhatsApp, plans to launch the tools globally before the end of the year.
The features will also include ‘nudges’ to encourage teenagers to switch to a different topic after repeatedly searching for the same thing and are aimed at encouraging them to discover something new.
Meta is also beginning to roll out a parent dashboard on all Quest virtual reality headsets worldwide.
