Mahela Jayawardene named as headcoach of Mumbai Indians: Sri Lankan legendary batsman Mahela Jayawardene has been appointed as the new headcoach of Mumbai Indians, the franchise announced on Nov 18. Jayawardene replaces Ricky Ponting, who spent four seasons with Mumbai Indians as a player, in an advisory role under John Wright and then later as headcoach.

In IPL 2013 season, Ricky Ponting was appointed as the captain of Mumbai Indians, but he dropped from captain spot himself, paving the way for Ricky Ponting and won their first IPL title. As a headcoach, he helped Mumbai Indians to lift their second IPL title after five consecutive defeats to begin the season.

Mahela Jayawardene, the legendary Sri Lankan batsman, served in a batting consultant rold for New Zealand team against Pakistan after retired from the International cricket. In IPL, he played for three franchise – Kings XI Punjab, Kochi Tuskers and Delhi Daredevils.
