On January 14th 2016, some of the most anticipated tamil films has been released for Pongal Festival. The compititors of pongal releases were Sivakarthikeyan’s Rajini Murugan, Vishal’s Kathakali, Sasi Kumar’s Tharai Thappattai and Udhayanithi Stalin’s Gethu. As per source, Rajini Murugan and Kathakali was granered more collections than Tharai Thappattai and Gethu movies.

Reportedly, Rajini Murugan emerged as winner of Pongal 2016 pongal release, According to trade news Sivakarthikeyan starrer declared as first blockbuster tamil movies of 2016. The movie made with low budget and grossed huge amount at box office. As per Source, Rajini Murugan collected Rs. 30+ crores in first two weeks at box office.
Apart from Rajini Murugan, Vishal’s Kathakali running successfully in all centers with housefull weekend shows. The film directed by Pandiraj and starring Cathirena Treasa in female lead. Kathakali received positive reviews from both critics and audience, Indeed the movie marked as breakthrough for Vishal in tamil after long break. The box office collection of Kathakali is around Rs. 25 crores after two weeks.
