MS Dhoni has stepped down as captain of India’s limited-overs teams ahead of the ODIs and T20Is against England in January. But he will be available for the selection as a wicket-keeper batsman, the BCCI said on January 04.
The selectors are meeting on January 06 to pick the squad for both ODI and T20I series against England which starts on January 15. Virat Kohli, who leads the Test side, will captain the limited over format game.
“On the behalf of every Indian cricket fan and the BCCI, I would like to thank MS Dhoni for his outstanding contribution as the captain of the Indian team across all formats,” BCCI chief executive Rahul Johri said. “Under his leadership, Indian team has touched new heights and his achievements will remain etched forever in the annals of Indian cricket.”
Ms Dhoni was retired from Test cricket in December 2014 after the Melbourne test. But he continued to play ODI and T20I formats as captain. He was captain of Indian cricket team since 2007.
He was most successful captain for Indian team. Under his captaincy, India won 2007 T20I world cup, 2011 World Cup and 2013 Champions Trophy. He was played 199 ODIs as captain and won 110 matches. He captained 72 T20 International matches and won 41 games.
He has 6633 ODI runs to his name as captain at an average of 54 with a strike-rate of 86. He scored 1112 runs in T20I as captain with a huge strike-rate of 122.60.
